March 2007

New Program Officer We are pleased to announce Tawnya N. Mason joined the Weingart Foundation in January 2007 as our latest addition to our grant making team. Before joining the Weingart Foundation, Tawnya was a program officer with First 5 LA focusing on early care and education. Prior to that position, she served as a director for child abuse treatment and prevention services at Richstone Family Center; director of a regional minority training program in cancer control research; and as a program officer with The California Wellness Foundation. Tawnya received her bachelor’s degree in business administration from CSU Dominguez Hills, and her master’s degree in public health from UCLA.
Grant perceptions of the Weingart Foundation The WF wants to thank the many organizations that participated in grantee perception focus groups. During 2006, the Foundation conducted six focus groups throughout Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The Foundation gained valuable insight into our grant making programs and policies from the grantee perspective. This information was reviewed with our Board of Directors at our annual planning conference. Music Center We have recently posted on this website an article about the Music Center’s education programs. For a number of years, the resident companies and education division associated with the Music Center have successfully administered Weingart Foundation grants focused on expanding art education to predominantly underserved schools and audiences throughout Los Angeles. The results of these programs have been universally positive and we believe they can serve as a model for arts education programs throughout southern California.
For Our Grantees Keeping in touch just got simpler! Recently, the Foundation revised its progress reporting system. New forms are now available on the home page of our web site, including a Word document that organizations can use to create their own progress reports. We have combined the Conditional Report that was previously required to be filed quarterly with the Interim Report that was required to be filed semi-annually. All reports on grants are now only expected twice per year. We are eager to hear of our grantees’ accomplishments and hope that these changes will make reporting easier.
