Colburn School of the Performing Arts
The Colburn School of the Performing Arts is so well-regarded in the arts community that renowned performers including Isaac Stern and Yo-Yo Ma teach master classes there. The 46-year-old school recently moved into a brand new facility that the Los Angeles Times lauded as one of the "jewels" in the Grand Avenue "arts necklace" that also includes the Music Center.
The $24 million capital campaign to build the new structure included a $150,000 Weingart Foundation grant, which provided furnishings and equipment for the children's music school. The Colburn School was named for philanthropist Richard Colburn, whose generosity provided for the building, as well as a planned conservatory next door. The new facility provides an inspirational home to its more than 1,000 ethnically diverse students aged 3 to 18. Scholarships totaling $80,000 per year go to more than 120 students.
In addition to providing arts instruction, Colburn presents free community outreach programs to nearly 20,000 students annually in inner-city public schools.
